Costa Brava > Overview
Overview

This heavenly haven used to depend on fishing for a living Yet during the 1950´s, the Franco government of Spain identified Costa Brava as fit for extensive development ready to be transformed into a holiday destination and a major tourist spot. The mix of warm summer climate and sun-kissed beaches soon paved the way to the construction of a large numbers of hotels and apartments in such seaside resorts as Tossa de Mar, Lloret de Mar and Estartit. The target clients were mainly tourists from Northern Europe and the United Kingdom.
But even while Costa Brava is making headlines as a tourist spot, where a big part of its coastline was improved and commercialized, a sizable potion of other coastlines still manage to maintain its traditional look. These then, in turn, became the subject of many a spirited hunt of visitors who want a little more than sun, sand and sangria. Small towns like Cadaqu which is located close to the French border and close to the foothills of the Pyrenees, have attracted artists no less than Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso themselves. They are now made into fashionable resorts. The coast between Roses and Tossa de Mar also has many delightful quiet coastal towns such as Pals, Begur, Tamariu, Calella, Llafranc, and Aigua Blava.
